A Critical Minerals Breakthrough
Xerion’s DirectPlate™ MSE Refinement Technology
Transforming the US Metal and Battery Supply Chain
Xerion has developed a groundbreaking single-step process for refining critical minerals using our proprietary DirectPlate™ Molten Salt Electrolysis (MSE) technology, beginning with cobalt metal. This revolutionary approach transforms crude cobalt hydroxide directly into high-purity cobalt metal (99%+ purity) with unprecedented efficiency and yield rates exceeding 98%. Originally developed for battery component refinement and synthesis, our innovative process dramatically reduces the complexity and cost of cobalt refinement while offering significant advantages in unit economics, supply chain security, and environmental sustainability.
With our pilot production line now operational in Dayton, Ohio, Xerion is demonstrating the commercial viability of this transformative technology at scale.
Securing America’s Critical Mineral Supply
The United States currently has zero domestic cobalt refinement capacity, with China controlling 72% of global refinement. As global cobalt demand is projected to more than double by 2050, this dependency represents a significant national security vulnerability. Xerion’s DirectPlate™ technology addresses this critical challenge by:
- Creating domestic refinement capacity that reduces reliance on foreign suppliers
- Simplifying the supply chain through a single-step continuous process
- Improving environmental performance with lower emissions and reduced water usage
- Enhancing economic competitiveness through dramatically lower processing costs
- Supporting national security objectives by securing access to critical battery materials
A Transformational Opportunity
Xerion’s DirectPlate™ MSE technology represents a transformational opportunity to reshape how America secures its critical mineral supply. Our approach not only addresses immediate supply chain vulnerabilities but establishes a foundation for sustainable domestic production of essential battery materials. With our five-ton capacity pilot facility now operational and plans for commercial-scale expansion, Xerion is positioned to become a cornerstone of America’s battery industry infrastructure.
By leveraging our decade of experience in innovative battery technologies, we’re creating a more resilient, environmentally responsible, and economically competitive domestic supply chain for the energy revolution.
